Teaching Philosophy
Art has been a critical part in my life for as long as I can remember. It has helped me to shape my thoughts, philosophies, experiences, and my sense of self. I believe that it has the ability to connect to every other discipline in the traditional school system, and reinforce knowledge and skills in a way that intrigues students and makes them want to learn and grow. More importantly, I believe that art makes us more aware of our own strengths, values, and capabilities. It is unlike any other subject because it teaches students about mistakes and how to reflect and grow from them. In art classes, exploration and creative thinking is encouraged without the fear of being penalized. In this way, I view art as a class about life. It understands the importance of all subject matters, as well as the reality of how our personal interests, experiences, and decisions affect if and how we prosper.
As a teacher, I hope to do more than just provide a formal foundation in the visual arts - I hope to inspire and empower students who feel like they don't matter, and teach them how to actively engage in all of the areas of their lives. It is my aim to create a classroom community in which my students can learn from each other through their differences and strengths, while I provide educational opportunities that aid in developing the necessary skills to succeed in the modern world.
To do this, I create lessons that allow students to explore their own interests and connecting them to life outside of school. Furthermore, I encourage collaboration, exploration, and risk taking. Students are given choices within each project, and as they develop throughout the semester, I give them more freedom and responsibility to take charge of their own artwork. I also provide the opportunity for students to receive feedback on their work and make changes if necessary before it is turned in. Finally, I continue to work and grow as an artist in order to provide a better, more authentic experience.
